"The Magnitude of Me"

When Reggie Jackson used the above phrase at his first Yankee press conference, it struck me as an extremely self-serving remark. Tubthumping won't augment our stature; we determine it in part by how well we do what we do. The rest is comprised of others' perceptions of the way we attack our goals. Yours. Reggie's. Mine.

My writing talent is open to debate.  Some people think my stuff's damn good, including (among others) prolific researcher David Marasco at  The Diamond Angle e- zine http://www.thediamondangle.com , Bill Shubb who does a bangup job at the Oakland Oaks website http://members.aol.com/oaklandoaks.html , the lovely and talented Todd Hawley of the San Francisco Seals page http://www.tdl.com/~thawley/seals.htm , and Todd Neuville, whose excellent character pieces have appeared in Baseball Digest and Baseball Todd's Dugout http://www.baseballtoddsdugout.com . All have great websites, and not just because they paid me a million dollars apiece to say so here. VISIT THEM!!

Others won't like my pieces no matter what. So be it. If my works were universally adored I wouldn't be writing powerfully or uniquely enough. I'd also have to get rid of my midgets.

Joy of joys, David Marasco just e-mailed(8/1/02) and promised me a BYLINE on The Diamond Angle! Nothing short of money could make me happier! He also added this page to his list of links at third on his list of 21!  If I could just get Joe Falls or Wilt Browning to surf in...UPDATE..8/13...Am now officially a 'Featured Writer' on The Diamond Angle! Up to 110+ pieces.  Discovered an autographed Carl Sandburg 'Complete Poems' in the local library's stacks last week(7/4/03). It had been sitting undetected for 53 YEARS!

10/1/03-I now tip the scales at 125 pieces.

12/23-Up to 133-including 21 Diamond Angle front pages in the last 8 months(34 total). Yes, it's been a very good year.

Proof God has a sense of Humor!

I was born at a very early age; March 4, 1956, in Danville, Virginia. Must have been an awfully gruesome looking baby, because the hospital made mom leave after 3 days.

After 25 years in radio and pizza I live in Eden, North Carolina.

Keeping the wrinkles out of my soul is why I write poetry and prose. If you wish to know which pays more, wish in one hand, crap in the other, and see which hand fills up fastest.

George "The Bull" Uhle was the Indians ace in the early and middle twenties but was nearly finished when this rendering was drawn. Look at that face. His nickname had to be short for "The Bulldog"!

Russ Van Atta was barely in the majors long enough to pick up his laundry, but he was a Yankee and the card looks good. Why not put him here?
